Kresen`, Bus (Asov, Aleksandr) Pesni Gamaiuna
[ Songs of Gamaiun]
Transl. by Aleksandr Asov; ill. by Viktor and Appolinarii Vasnetsov
Moscow: Fair-pressa, 2005 ISBN: 5818309517 Language: RussianThe Gamaiun, a black feathered bird with a man’s face, is a folklore character who prophecies the future. This book is a collection of Old Russian legends about the origins of the world; the gods Svarog, Perun and Veles; the most respected natural elements, folk characters and patrons of Rus: Finist, Lel`, Kostroma, Kupala, Morozko, Snegurochka, etc. These legends and songs are translated by Aleksandr Asov who sees a solid foundation of modern Russian national renaissance in two books: “The Book of Veles’” (Velesova Kniga) and “The Hymn of Boian”. Both texts, in the opinion of most prominent historians, philologists and linguists are mere forgeries that did not prevent these books from becoming very popular with Russians. The first publication of “Pesni Gamaiuna" was in 1992.
