This monograph deals with the Church side of the "Eastern question", which was central for the politics of several great powers of the 19th century. Based on archival materials, the book studies the relationship between Russia and the Constantinopol Patriarchy in 1878-1898, the 20 year period after the Russian-Turkish wars. This period was a time of revival of the Byzantine ideology in official life and a time of hidden confrontation between the Russian and Greek ecumenical ideologies. L. Gerd also covers the specific actions of Russian Church politics: Russian presence on Mt. Athos, participation in the Greek-Bulgarian issue, preservation of the status of the Russian Church in Turkey, opening of the Constantinopol House in Moscow, etc. Bibliographical references.
