Among the numerous memoirs and diaries published in the recent years there have been very few about the history of masonry in Russia and its place in the life of the nobility. The life of masons was kept secret partially because this membership was forbidden. The unique value of the present memoirs is that the masonic legacy was inherited by the Arsen`evs almost directly from Nikolai Novikov (1744-1818), the writer and publisher arrested as a mason by Catherine the Great, and transmitted from generation to generation within the Arsen`ev family. The main character of this book is Vasilii Sergeevich Arsen`ev (1829-1915), his memoir is supplemented with the memoirs of his offspring and relatives. Genealogy of the Arsen`ev family.
