During his stay in Russia Gordon witnessed and reflected in his diary many historical events: the Northern war (1655-1660), the Russian-Polish war of 1654-1667, the Copper rebellion in Moscow, the struggle for power in Ukraine, diplomatic contact between Russia and Great Britain, two Chigirin marches of the Russian and Ukrainian armies against the Ottoman Empire, etc. The diary is supplemented with Gordon`s letters and documents about him from Russian and British archives, some of them published for the first time.
