This book is about the wintering of the third Dutch expedition looking for a Northern Sea Route to the Pacific Ocean. Willem Barents was the real head of the 1596-1597 expedition. Materials collected by different commercial and scientific expeditions of 1871-1995 were summarized in this book. These materials are housed in Russian, Dutch, and Norwegian museums and scientific institutions. Special attention is paid to the reconstruction of the house where the first wintering has been experienced by the west European sea farers in the high Arctic latitude around the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The search for W. Barents`s grave is also described in the book. 35 illustrations, 38 tables. Summary in English.
