This is the first monograph on folklore and rituals related to send-off to the military service in the Russian village at the turn of the 20th century. The author also studies the general attitude towards military service in the twentieth century: from its absolute rejection to high acceptance in 1960-1980s. Kormina analyzes the main reasons and factors of the attitude and its changes using categories of collective identity, perception of the state in traditional society, rituals of the life cycle, etc. Also used in this study are interviews with recruits, their letters, soldier`s folklore, etc. Bibliography (324-343).
