This book deals with the activities of mystical secret societies during the reign of Alexandr the First (1801-1825). Members of these societies, mostly masonic lodges, penetrated key government offices and fought for influence on the pusillanimous and inconsistent emperor. This monograph describes for the first time the resistance and opposition of hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church to this intervention and their important role in preserving the status quo in the Russian government institutions.
