The capital work "The History of Russia" by Vasilii Tatishchev (1686-1750) had always a reputation as a good collection of excerpts from old chronicles lost after the historian`s death. The Ukrainian historian Oleksii Tolochko argues with this common perception of Tatishchev`s work. He shows that the sources of this work were not "old chronicles" and they do exist: the excerpts of old chronicles are skillful forgeries created by Tatishchev himself.
