German (Nikolai Riashentsov, 1883-1991) was ordained priest in 1906, elevated to bishop of Volokolamsk (Iosifo-Volokolamskii monastery) in 1919, and arrested in 1921. Then his service to the Russian Orthodox Church was interrupted by several more arrests and exiles. In 1928 he was installed as bishop of Viazniki but was in this position for only four months before was arrested again. All the long years in prisons and exiles he kept writing letters to his confidants with his thoughts about the Russian Orthodox religion and the Church.
