[ A.O. Smirnova-Rosset in Russian culture of the 19th century]
Moscow: Ros. Gos. Gumanit. Un-t, 2004 556 p pbk. 12 x 20 cm ISBN: 5728107842 Language: RussianThis book is a biography of Aleksandra Smirnova-Rosset (1809-1882), the author of “Notes”. This famous book of her memoirs contained interesting information about Russian literary and court life, and Russian classic writers in their relations with Tsar Nicholas the First. It was severely criticized by some historians as falsified by its compiler, the author`s daughter O. Smirnova, and highly appreciated by other readers for its religious and political tendencies. A. Osipova, an outstanding woman of St. Petersburg society, the empress`s maid of honor, a diplomat`s wife, was friends with many notable people of her time: Zhukovskii, Pushkin and Gogol’, etc. Appendices include new archival documents, her biography of Pushkin. Comments. The two editions of Smirnova-Rosset`s book of memoirs are also available.
