This is the first Russian study of the female prison as a special phenomenon, and its differences from the male prison. Interviews and stories of women locked in Russian prisons, attached as a supplement to the book, is worth our attention even without academic commentaries and theories. Liudmila Al`pern studied Russian women’s prisons as a scholar (Department of Political Anthropology at the Institute of Philosophy) and as a functionary of the Center for Reform of Criminal Justice. She criticizes Russian prisons for women, showing that they were built for men and therefore do not take into account women’s nature and do not help their prisoners to be rehabilitated. Bibliography (pp. 437-445).
