This monograph is based on archival materials of the Bulgakov family collected and preserved by his younger sister Nadezhda Afanas`evna Bulgakova-Zemskaia (1893-1971). It helps to explain Bulgakov`s world and his background. This book mostly reflects the Kievan period of Bulgakov`s life, and his first and last years in Moscow. Most of the documents included in this book have not been published. It contains about 200 photographs and other illustrative materials. E.A. Zemskaia, a modern Russian philologist, paid a special attention to Bulgakov`s literary language and its sources. Bibliography. Summary in English.
