In 1993-1996 he was a columnist for the newspaper Russkaia Mysl` published in Paris in which he reported Russian news. Taken together these reports may serve as a guide and comments to political events and social transformations in Russia during that time: a peak of political activism in all strata of society, the democratic movement to which the author belong, debates in the Russian parliament, the process of losing sovereignty by members of the Russian Federation, the return of A. Solzhenitsyn, about 150 Russian mafias, the oil aspect of the Chechen wars, reelection of El`tsin, the search for a new national ideology, etc. Timofeev is a pioneer of studies of corruption in Russia.
