This collection investigates the visual arts of the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th-early 20th centuries, their trends and artistic conflicts. Approaches of the Church, religious artists, people, and the imperial authorities on the ecclesiastical arts were very different and very often came into conflict. The authors trace new trends and changes of old traditions in Church art, both in Russian capitals and in the provinces. Special attention is paid to dramatic cases when individual vision and interpretation of biblical themes by the giants of Russian art A. Ivanov and N. Ge clashed with official church doctrine. Practically all genres of ecclesiastical art are covered in the collection: painting, sculpture, architecture, church utensils and plate, etc. 126 illustrations, including 16 in color. Indices, bibliography.
