This is a history of the Great Schism in the Russian Orthodox Church in the seventeenth century. Thanks to the support of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich, Patriarch Nikon accumulated great power in his hands, which he used to conduct the reforms to bring clerical traditions into line with contemporary Greek customs. The crisis related with these reforms weakened the Church and caused the deposition of the patriarch. This book traces the history of forming the Russian religious consciousness from the pre-Christian epoch till the 17th century. This book tells the history of numerous religious sects within the Russian Orthodox Church during that period. Two more books by the same medieval historians are also available: Tainy Iazycheskoi Rusi (2000); Sviataia Rus’ ot Iskhoda do Kreshcheniia (2002).
