This volume contains two connected novels by the wonderful Russian writer Iurii Dombrovskii (1909-1978). The main conflicts of these two books, Khranitel` Drevnostei and Fakul`tet Nenuzhnykh Veshchei, are freedom of the human spirit vs. despotism, rewriting history vs. historical consciousness, prosperity vs. truth and human values. The author spent most of his adult life in prison, camps, and exile: 1932-1955. His first novel was published in 1964.
