At that time Moscow had 280 churches and chapels with 523 altars. The current volume contains descriptions of the buildings that were located between the Sadovoe Kol`tso and the railroad around Moscow in 1917. Religious monuments are arranged in three groups: active (as of 1990), surviving but closed, and destroyed. Peter Palamarchuk (1955-1998), the author-compiler of this unique four-volume edition, based his essays on numerous archival documents. This new revised edition is updated with all the information available in 2004. Bibliographical references. Richly illustrated, including 32 color inserted pages.
