This book is about the formation of a new profession in theater, directing, first in England, France, and Germany, and then in Russia. The director became a key figure in the theater of the twentieth century, taking away this role from actors, artists, musicians, or playwrights. This monograph is about the history of this change and how directors transformed the nature of theater and created on stage their own world, different from the world outside the theater. Russian theater in general, and the Moscow Artistic Theater in particular, played a significant role in creating the director`s theater.
