Local governments of the administrative units of the Russian empire published their own information books (Pamiatnaia knizhka) which included official data about the unit (gubernia or oblast); addresses of the government entities and officials, information about the administrative structure, post offices, enterprises, education, health care, theaters, etc. This is the first volume of the series of indexes of these books published by the Russian National Library (St. Petersburg). Description of these publication is arranged geographically, then chronologically. Each chapter includes: historical essay, indices of publications, names, illustrations, subject index along with geographical keys.
