This is the last book by the outstanding Russian historian of literature Vadim Erazmovich Vatsuro (1935-2000). Vatsuro is best known as a Pushkinist and a specialist in Lermontov, Karamzin, and the poetry of Pushkin`s age. His main areas of interest were Russian lyrics, literary life, history of publishing and censorship in the 19th century. This book is about the so called Gothic novel: European literature of the eighteenth which was popular in literary salons of London and St. Peterburg, Paris and Moscow.
