Mikhail Speranskii (1772-1839) was the principal adviser to Alexander I, also known as a `reformer-dreamer`, author of several books reflecting the epoch of the Aleksander`s liberalism, and his exile to Siberia, his governorship, and his subsequent return during the reign of Nicholas I to undertake the tremendous task of the codification of Russian law. In the time of his exile he revised the system of governorship, and compiled a code of laws for this region, known as "Sibirskoe Uchrezhdenie of 1822". This book is a collection of his letters to his daughter written in the period of his Siberian exile. They combine information about his private life with business and the concerns of a great statesman, his pedagogic views, literary and cultural preferences. This is a reprint of 159 letters from the magazine Russkii Arkhiv for 1868.
