This monograph is about supplies of the basic goods for the population in the first four years of the Bolshevik state when the new government tried to monopolize this area, but could not make it work. Many Russians organized illegal supplies of food, clothing, and other necessities to the rest of population. The book studies the place, role and structure of new merchants, called "meshochniki", in the economic and social life of Russia, their relations with government officers, methods of conflict resolution. The study goes beyond the post-revolutionary period and analyzes trends of Russian self-supply of living essentials during the whole twentieth century.
