This monograph by a well known Russian philologist offers an original approach to the chronology of Runic inscriptions, its correspondence with previously developed chronological periods. It discusses the status of the oldest Runic inscriptions that have been found, and the areas of their excavations. The author pays special attention to Runic onomastics which, he thinks, has principal meaning not only for this field of study, but also for the comparative grammar of German languages and the ancient history of German tribes in general. Appendices include the corpus of the oldest Runic inscriptions, list of Runic onomastics, list of grammatical forms from the inscriptions, dictionary of the oldest Runic inscriptions.
