Petr Uspenskii was a well known Russian religious philosopher of mystical orientation. He started as a follower of Gurdjiev, but later turned towards the religious and mystic experience of hesichasts, those who has taken a vow of silence. Mountain Athos, a center of Eastern monks, was also a center of hesichasm. Uspenskii wrote his book in dialog with ancient Fathers and modern philosophers. That is why this volume includes three other works related to the first one: The Secrete Doctrine by E. Blavatskaia; excerpts from Abba Dorotheus’s Edifying Teachings and Messages; and Varieties of Religious Experience by William James.
