This collection of essays by Russian philologist, philosopher, and historian of culture Grigorii Pomerants (1918-2013) was first published in Paris in 1984. It addresses several topics which are still very topical: the image of Russia in the poetry of the 19th-20th centuries, critics of Solzhenitsyn`s philosophy of history, etc. Several recent articles of 1990-2004 were added to the original publication: about the fall of the Russian Empire and the post-imperial time of troubles.
