This book is the history of the creation of a center of academic studies in Siberia near the city of Novosibirsk in the late 1950s. The academic center was one of the most successful experiments in the organization and development of Russian science, and it produced numerous significant scientific achievements and discoveries. Several generations of scholars in many different fields were raised in the center who now define the face of Russian science. Akademgorodok became also the center of active social and cultural life, the center of independent thought and dissident activities in the 1960s. The book describes the most important moments in the center`s history, introduces the most significant figures, including the founders: academicians M.A. Lavrent`ev and S.L. Sobolev.
