The nationalist conflicts of the 1980-1990s that caused a renewed interest in the problems of ethnic identity, prompted this study of the personal, social, and collective components of ethnicity among four Finno-Ugric people of the Ural area: Mordovians, Udmurts, Marians, and Komi. The analysis covers the period from the end of the last century to the present. Seppo Lallukka (b. 1944), establishes the peculiarities of the Eastern Finno-Ugric nationalities` ethnic status defined by their geographical location on the route of Russian eastward migration and by their weak resistance to the assimilation processes. He describes the implementation of Stalin`s contradictory policy that theoretically encouraged "thriving, as well as rapprochement" of nationalities on common Russian grounds and enforced bilingualism. The effect of Finnish-Russian intermarriages on assimilation is analyzed. Bibliography, references.
