This book studies the ethnic history and current ethnic and cultural processes of the Russian and Finno-Ugrian population at the European North. The author, M.V. Vitov (1923-1968), shows the difference of ethnological mapping from different methods of mapping, and proves it to be a primary method of ethnographic study. All statistical data are processed with the aid of computers. The last chapter contains the result of the studies: a typology of folk culture based on created maps. 72 ethnographic maps and statistical data on housing are included.
