This book shows the development of free enterprise in Russia from the 17th to the early 20th century and gives a short survey of the preceding period. In the first part the authors analyze the national mentality in relation to business practice, compare historical Russian methods of operation to those adopted in Europe and the US, look at national traditions in their labor-and-capital, capital-and-state aspects, consider questions of business with regard to society and politics. The second part depicts multifarious and often colorful characters of Russian and some foreign entrepreneurs who conducted business in Russia. Each chapter is followed by bibliographic references.
