This work by the last Archpresbyter of the Russian Army and Navy is a series of lectures on pastoral theology. The author summarizes the views of Russian and other theologians on various aspects of pastoral activity, and illustrates the theory with facts from his own rich pastoral practice. After defining major Christian notions: on dual human nature, on the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of nature, the author turns to a discussion of the ecclesiastical mission. Here he distinguishes between an external call and an internal vocation, describes the education of a pastor, the differences between the Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant model of pastorship, the task of spiritual guidance, struggle with one`s own temptations, struggle against superstition and atheism, and attitude toward war and politics.
