Using the methods of modern hermeneutics, the author deciphers literary images to bring out the underlying ideas that define all of Gogol’s creations. The book shows the influence of German literature and philosophy, and in particular of Hegel’s thought, upon the works of Gogol. According to the author, the imprint of Hegel’s “Phenomenology of Spirit” can be detected in the “Nights in a village near Dikanka”, as well as in “Petersburg tales” and, finally, comes out undisguised in “Excerpts from correspondence with friends”.
