The soviet labor camp system GULAG included more then fifty camp complexes named for their locations. This book, the first of its kind, is a history of one camp complex near the city of Viatka in the Russian North. The complex consisted of ten camps. Viktor Berdinskikh wrote the history of the labor camp Viatlag from its founding in 1938 to the crisis of the camp empire in the early 1960s, including: the most significant events, like the rebellion led by Dmitrii Panin; biographical sketches of the best known prisoners; Gulag authorities. The book is based on numerous archival documents, some of them are included in the text. Bibliography, a dictionary of camp slang. V. Berdinskikh is also the author of Peasants` Civilization in Russia (2001).
