This is the story of the well known Russian artist Pavel Fedotov (1815-1852). He gave eighteen years to military service and only eight years to his artistic calling, but he did enough to became one of the classics of Russian painting. The book was written Viktor Shklovskii, the writer and literary critic, who is also known as one of the founders of Russian formalism.
