This is a reprint of a book by renowned economist V.K. Dmitriev (1868-1913) in modern orthography. The work contains a thorough analysis of the reasons, essence and consequences of one of the most tragic sides of Russian life, alcoholism. The author studies both economic and social factors defining the consumption of alcohol: industrial and agricultural crises, measures on prohibition, taxes, urbanization, etc. The author attributes the increase in alcohol consumption to the disintegration of the patriarchal peasant village, the loss of its economic and social traditions, sources of income, and self- identity (`raskrest`ianivanie`).
