Москва: Языки Русскои Культуры, 2000 198 p Hardcover ISBN: 5785901684 Язык: РусскийIn this monograph the author disputes the opinions of her predecessors who negated the existence of authors` self-consciousness in ancient Russian culture. She gives detailed analysis of the most interesting monuments such as the oldest Chronicles, hagiography, “Exhortation” by the Great Prince Vladimir Monomakh, Descriptions of Pilgrimage, “Prayers” and “Speech” by Daniil Zatochnik (Recluse), the “Lives of Saints” by Epifanii the Wise and “Laudatory Oration” by the monk Foma. The author`s self-consciousness is presented in its development. According to Koniavskaia, writers of Ancient Russia didn’t see themselves as the creators of literary works but interpreted their writing as a humble service to the Divine Word, while their individuality gives up its place to the collective mentality and tradition. But individual voices sounded through the strict canons and traditional formulations revealing to the reader the authors` personality. Bibliographic references.
