This monograph studies archaic layers of Russian folklore in one of the oldest Eastern Slavic territories of Russia, the Pskov Land. The author focuses on the calendar cycle, particularly the harvest. She describes harvest rituals, its artistic symbols, lamentations and weeping. The study was based on fieldwork of 1981-1997 by scholars from the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Most rituals are published for the first time. They are provided with scores.
