Volume one is the first translation of a book first published in St. Petersburg in German in 1897. It is about the Irtysh Ostiaks, a small indigenous nation of the Finno-Ugric group that lived in Siberia. S. Patkanov described the Ostiaks settled at the basin of Irtysh river, their life style and religion, and main causes of their extinction. He collected their folk poetry. Volume two is a collection of Patkanov`s articles on Siberian colonization published in Russian periodicals in 1890-1910s. Also included is a dictionary of Tobol words and expressions compiled by the author and his colleagues (pp. 249-290). Comments. List of Patkanov`s main publications.
