This book is a part of the series The Church Reforms: Discussions of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Early 20th Century. This monograph studies the pre-revolutionary history of the Russian Orthodox Church from a specific angle: What could the Russian Orthodox Church undertake in the situation of approaching revolutions? Could the Church secure itself in case of the fall of the Russian monarchy and autocracy? The author analyzes the place of the Church in the political system of Russia, discussions of anticipated reforms inside the Church, and the existing problems of the Department of Orthodox Confessions. The monograph is based on many new or little known sources, including the materials of the Council of Local Churches of 1917-1918 (Pomestnyi Sobor).
