This monograph studies the history of social transformation of life in Middle Asia from the end of 19th century to the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. The history is illustrated with the example of one village (kishlak) that went through capture, repressions, economic growth and cultural modernization. It is based on various sources, including interviews, documents and field studies. The author studies his subject in the light of the theory of post colonialism, cultural hybridness, and others.
