This is a book of memoirs of Russian officer Aleksandr Ivanovich Verkhovskii (1886–1938), the defense minister of the Interim government, who later joined the Red army, became a professor in the military academy and, like many high ranking officers, was repressed in 1938. This book is his diaries during WWI. The first edition was published in 1918. Verkhovskii not only describes the main battles but also offers his suggestions on how to fight the anarchy and preserve a military spirit in the army. The book is provided with the introduction and comments by A.M. Savinov
