According to the author of this book, the famous Russian medievalist Valentin Ianin (b. 1929), a participant and for many years the chair of the Novgorod Archeological Field Expedition, it is yet too early to write the academic history of medieval Novgorod. The city is more than a thousand years old, and was the center of the Novgorod Republic in the period 1136-1478. The amazing discoveries of Russian archaeology of the 20th century, Novgorod birch bark deeds from five to nine hundred years old found in 1951-2000s, made scholars from several fields: archeology, linguistics, and history, unite their effort in restructuring the history of the city.
