This photo album of the architectural monuments of the old Russian town Usol`e was made by professor of Slavic Studies William Brumfield (Tulane University). He is one of the leading specialists in the Russian North. The town of Usol`e, founded in 1669, has many monuments built by a famous Russian family, the Stroganovs, who were explorers and conquerors of Siberia in 1579-1584. The family had a monopoly on the production of salt in this region in the 16th century. The Stroganovs spent a fortune building and decorating churches in the region. The original style of the icons and the church decor is called Stroganov style. 124 illustrations. Enamel-paper. Abstract and list of illustrations in English. (.91 kg)
