Man in the extreme conditions of war, his thoughts and behavior is the main subject of this book. The author, a scholar from the Institute of Russian History, studies numerous manifestations of a new war mentality: the psychology of battle, soldier`s fatalism, heroic drive and panic, realities of frontier life, relationship between the soldier and his officers, competition among different divisions in the army, the role of ideology and propaganda, symbols and myths of war.
