Language: RussianThe Optina Wilderness monastery in the Kaluga area is very well known to Russian Orthodox Christians and used to be a center of Eastern Orthodox spiritual life. It was so influential that Nikolai Gogol and Lev Tolstoi made pilgrimages there. The spiritual leader of the monastery in the middle of the 19th century was the hermit monk Makarii (d. 1860). This book, written by one of Makarii’s disciples, was first published in 1861 and now is supplemented by Makarii’s own writings and annotated index of names. Bibliography.
