It was so influential that Nikolai Gogol and Lev Tolstoi made pilgrimages there. The spiritual leader of the monastery in the middle of the 19th century was the hermit monk Makarii (d. 1860). This book, written by one of Makarii’s disciples, was first published in 1861 and now is supplemented by Makarii’s own writings and annotated index of names. Bibliography.
