Nadezhda Durova (1783-1866), the first Russian woman officer, joined the army in 1806 presenting herself as Aleksandr Sokolov. She participated in the Russian-French wars (1807, 1812-14), and was a batman of Field Marshal Kutuzov. After her retirement from the army she became a writer. Aleksandr Pushkin appreciated her prose and was her first publisher. This new book about her is based on new archival sources and documents and sheds light on the unknown pages of her life.
