In this report the author considers questions of political manipulation of the population of the Chechen Republic during the coming to power of General Dzhokhara Dudaev prior to the beginning of a confrontation. Zaurbekova uses ethnographic material concerning the mentality and moral-ethical characteristics of the Chechen people directly connected with the case in point.
