This is the most complete collection of legends and tales of the peoples of the Nizhnii Novgorod (former Gor`kii) region. These legends have been collected in the last 150 years. Among them is the old Russian legend about a holy town, Kitezh, as a refuge for faithful believers which made many people wander in search of this place. This legend was revived in the wonderful opera by N. Rimskii-Korsakov. The other famous story is about the Russian Saint Iurii Vsevolodovich (Georgii, Giurgii) Kirdiapin (about 1189-1238) who built a new town near Lake Svetloiar later called Kitezh. Bibliography.
