Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov (1673-1729) was a famous courtier and comrade-in-arms of Peter the Great. He made a dazzling career from a peddler who sold pastries in the streets of Moscow to “his Highness Lofty Prince” and “Generalissimo” and won impressive victories in the Northern War of 1700-1721. After Peter’s death in 1725 he became de facto ruler of Russia under the dowager Empress Katherine I and Peter II (1715-1730). In 1727 through the efforts of rivals he was exiled. Supplements include comments and dates of his life. Aleksandr Sokolov (1910-1977) is the author of several books. This is a reprint of the book first published in 1993.
