D. Miliutin (1816-1912) was a military historian and military minister during the reign of Alexander the Second, the leader of the great reforms of 1860-1870s. Miliutin kept a diary for almost his entire life. This is one of the most important memoirs of the 19th century. It was prepared for publication in 1914-1919. Volume one was published in Tomsk by the White Army. Subsequent volumes have never appeared. This book covers 1843-1856 when Miliutin: was a professor of military geography in the military academy, wrote his major works on the military history of Russia and the 1853-56 Crimean war. One of the chapters describes the last days of Nicholas the First. Commentary, name and geographic indices. Appendices included. This memoir is planned to be published in ten volumes. Two other volumes of the series are also available.
