This book introduces the results of the Program of Fundamental Studies of the Presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences "Adaptation of nations and cultures to changes in environment, and social and technological transformations" (2006-2008). The program studied ethnoses in the situations of settlement in new territories, as well as when they found themselves in a new social and technological situation. This collection is a result of the collective effort of Russian archeologists, anthropologists, historians, ethnologists, and philologists.
